AI2 Selected Works
AI2 Selected Works
Skills: print design, print production, typesetting, ui design
Situation:
The Allen Institute for AI, founded by Paul Allen, has been on the cutting edge of artificial intelligence research since its inception in 2014. Dr. Oren Etzioni, founding CEO, requested a volume of works to showcase the organization’s many great achievements over the years as a parting gift before stepping down in September 2022.
Action:
Book design is a labor of love. And typesetting is becoming rarer and rarer as fewer folks are fluent in print production. Fortunately, I was raised in an era of print dominance. My first job out of undergrad was in traditional print and broadcast. I had the absolute delight of being steeped in press checks, and audio booths. And I wouldn’t have it any other way. I was able to channel this love of media into the AI2 Selected Works volume. I created the look and feel, the cover pattern artwork, and I typeset every word in its 406 pages. The true magic, however, is the research showcased inside.
While not working on the physical book and managing vendor quotes and communications, I also was tasked with the Digital Companion Guide, a lightweight web experience with links to the papers referenced in the volume.
